People ask us about the name almost as often as they ask about the Khao Soi. Big Mango? Like the fruit? Kind of. But not really. Here’s the actual story of why we’re called “The Big Mango,” straight from me.
We Knew What We Didn’t Want
Before Nina and I landed on a single word, we spent weeks doing the opposite: crossing names off a list. If you’ve driven around Salt Lake County, or really any city for that matter, you’ve seen the pattern. “Thai [Something].” “[Something] Thai Kitchen.” “Royal Thai.” “Bangkok [Something].” Nothing wrong with any of it, but none of it sticks. You drive past it and forget it by the next light.
We didn’t want a name that blended in. We wanted something people would remember on the first hearing, ask about on the second visit, and repeat to a friend without even thinking about it. Fun. Playful. A little irreverent. Not another template.
We Didn’t Want to Just Call It “Bangkok”
Everything we do here traces back to Bangkok — it’s Nina’s hometown, it’s where we go to source ingredients, ideas, inspiration, and it’s the flavor world we’re building the whole menu around. So for a while, the obvious move seemed to be naming the place some version of “Bangkok.”
It felt too obvious. Accurate, sure. Memorable, not really. We wanted the name to carry some of the same energy as the city itself — loud, a little chaotic, genuinely fun — instead of just labeling where the food comes from.
Then We Found Bangkok’s Other Nickname
Somewhere in the research rabbit hole, we found it: Bangkok has a nickname of its own. “The Big Mango.” It started in the 1990s as Bangkok’s tourism board’s own wink at New York’s “Big Apple” — a big, energetic capital city getting its own fruit-themed nickname, mango being about as beloved and iconic in Thailand as it gets.
Here’s the part we actually love about it: you’ll see “The Big Mango” in travel guides and expat forums, but most Bangkok locals have never heard of it or don’t use it. It’s an insider’s nickname more than an everyday one. That felt exactly right for us — a name that rewards people who dig a little, the same way we hope our menu does. It nodded to Bangkok, nodded to Thailand’s love of mango, and had that same Big Apple swagger we were chasing without copying it outright.
It Just Clicked
It took a while to get there — longer than either of us expected for what feels obvious in hindsight. But the second we said “The Big Mango” out loud, we knew. Jeff started sketching logo ideas almost immediately, and every piece of branding after that came together fast. When a name is right, the rest of it stops being a struggle.
A Name as Bold as the Food
The same instinct that made us skip the safe, templated restaurant name is the instinct that runs the kitchen. We didn’t want to cut corners on the name, and we don’t cut corners on the food — no filler vegetables padding out a dish, no shortcut pastes when we can bring the real thing back from Bangkok and Chiang Mai ourselves. The name was never just a name. It was the first decision that told us what kind of restaurant we were building. We are all about Bangkok vibes and flavor.

Now you know the story behind the name. The best way to understand it, though, is still the original way — a plate of Pad Thai, Khao Soi, or a Bangkok-style Wagyu Smash Burger in front of you.
